Straighten Out!

Fri, 11 March 2016, 1:51 pm: The prime reason for my spring 2016 England trip is manifest.

It was closer to three than two by the time they took the stage, but the basement bar supplied enough suds that the tightly packed crowd didn’t mind. I had to hold my fist-pumping in check to be able to film the video below. I did not, however, hold my singalong skills in check; you can hear me supplying a key change during every chorus of “London Lady,” Straighten Out’s note-for-note recreation of one of my favorite cuts from The Stranglers’ 1977 debut album.

I was about as far away from the stage as you could get, figuring in a crowded small space the sound quality might be better at a greater distance. Okay, fine, I was at the back because that’s where the bar is.

Not a bad couple of close-ups below, considering how far back I was.20160311_145330

Straighten Out lived up to their acclaim as the most sound-alike of the good-sized handful of Stranglers cover bands. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then the Men in Black oughtta be flattered indeed by the near flawless late 70s-early 80s punk/new wave blasting in the pub basement this afternoon.

I’m such a tease.

Fri, 11 March 2016, 12:33 pm: Over a year since my solo “Strangling London” tour and I am still in production on the video documentary. While you wait to see the full show, here are two quick teasers of footage shot on the Millennium Bridge.

This is the second newest of the thirty-five bridges that cross the Thames in London. The two still shots I grabbed during this video session both focus on the railing.20160311_123742

Fri, 11 March 2016, 10:36 am: Between my hotel and my favorite cafe is this little church. 20160311_103522

I walk past it twice every morning this week, and I pull a Dionne Warwick and say a little prayer for my continued safe travels and for the continued health of my family back home.20160311_103544

You can follow a sidewalk around the left side of the building (I didn’t do that, so I don’t know for sure what’s back there.)20160311_103744

It’s now March 2016, so this relandscaping is ten months behind schedule. Same crews are overseeing the four-laning of State Road 17 in DeSoto and Hardee Counties in Florida.

I took this photo standing at the left side of the front of the church, facing Blackfriars Road. Walk a block north (toward that white building) and The Mad Hatter hotel will be on your left.
